I had a wonderful time in Delaware, Ohio last night during the Super Bowl. Chris, Lyndell Montgomery, and Julie Kelly performed at The Mean Bean Cafe's upstairs lounge space. Wow, the three of them singing together was just lovely.

Nice space. Nice group of people in the audience, not like the rude group at East Village in Columbus last time.

Okay, so I was EASILY twice the age of every student in the room, but that's okay. I just really enjoy music in intimate spaces. I did find a nice lady in her 30's to sit with and chat about Ferron, Loreena McKennitt, Amy Ray, and all things middle-aged between songs.

I also got a primo view of Space Station Alpha flying overhead on my way into Delaware. It was an all-around good evening. Wish I hadn't had to leave early. I get up at 4 a.m. for work.

The new EP, Chimera is fun to listen to as well.

1/22/09 Tin Angel in Philadelphia

I was already thrilled beyond belief that Chris Pureka is playing the Tin Angel on Thursday, January 22, 2009.

Finally, she is headlining a show in Philly! Previously, she did that American Songwriters Tour at the Tin Angel, and then opened for Melissa Ferrick in December 2007 at World Cafe Live.

Now, she is billed first and deservedly so.

and then I found out Lyndell Montgomery will be accompanying her...

Yes, this Lyndell Montgomery:

That is too many hot women on stage at the same time. As I found out at an Amy Ray/Kaia Wilson concert, that is just not fair. You can't focus on both at the same time, and when you try, you look like you are watching a tennis match. Each needs their own special staring time. Not. Fair.
Oh, and did I mention that Nicole Reynolds is opening?

curious

current location: feeling better at home
current mood: curious

Did anyone go to the festival on Saturday? Chris, Ellis, and Janis Ian all in the same place! I so wanted to go, but I have been sick and couldn't make it.

Any reviews? Was it wonderful? god-awful hot? I am thinking about trying again next year.

hi y'all --

i was wondering if anyone here had the tab for these pages? i can't get this song and her voice out of my head. i'm having a really hard time finding chris tab on the internet in general -- the only place that has tab is her website, but not for the songs i'm interested in learning to play.

 thanks in advance.

Chris and Lyndell at East Village

ecstatic

current location: Columbus
current mood: ecstatic
current song: Chris, of course

Chris Pureka performed at East Village in Columbus, Ohio last night to start her Midwest Tour. She had Lyndell Montgomery along playing wicked bass and violin. I really enjoyed the opportunity to see her because the last time was several years ago at old Club 202.

Unfortunately, East Village on a Saturday night at 10pm is horribly noisy. To make matters worse, there was no cover to see the performance and many of the patrons were overly loud--not appreciating the efforts of artists they hadn't paid to see. I hope the audience at her next stop is more polite.

I sat at the bar rather close to the stage and had to strain to hear. Chris was gracious as always--telling the story about her last visit and her guitar getting stolen in Ann Arbor, MI. She took the time between sets to sign CD's and meet the fans. I asked if I could take a picture and she was great about posing with me.

It's funny because each time I talked to her in person she said, "You look familiar. Do I know you from somewhere?" I think that it's just because college physics professors all look alike and I must remind her of someone at Smith.

image of Melissa FerrickIf there is one thing we all know about Melissa Ferrick, it's that she gives us one hell of a live show. "Skinnier, Faster, Live at the B.P.C." continues to be one of her top selling albums. And now, 8 years later, she gives us her latest: "Live at Union Hall". Packed with her charming and witty banter, her ferocious guitar skills and her addictive fervor, "Live at Union Hall" welcomes you back in for the ride and reminds us why Ann Powers (NY TIMES) said, "Ferrick's live shows define her popularity, she plays her acoustic guitar as if it were a full band and stresses improvisation in her vocals."

image of Chrisreka PurekaChris Pureka's sophomore release, Dryland plays like the way she enters a room: with low, deliberate airs, quietly demanding respect. One stark, solo acoustic guitar builds into layered swan songs and raspy serenades that resonate with unassuming depth and candor.
